File Organization
Files on a computer are similar to those in a file cabinet. Generally speaking, however, file cabinets do not group files within files as we can do on a computer. Within each file will be various documents that are relative to the title of each folder. Without this kind of organization,it is difficult to locate the large quantity of documents throughout your computer. Examine file organizationRight click the Start menu and go to Explore. Observe how files are organized and grouped, sometimes five or six deep. Most files become lost if they are buried too deep inside other files, so as a rule, three deep is probably the maximum you want to go when creating your own file organization. A plus sign in front of a file signifies more files within that file. Clicking the (+) sign will expand the file, exposing all other files within. By clicking a minus sign (-) you can colapse the files within and return to the base file.
Creating a New FileFiles can be created just about anywhere on your computer. Lets practice on the Desktop. Begin by right clicking on the desktop, click New, and then select Folder. Type a name for your folder to Identify it. To add a file inside of this file, open your new file, right click again, select New, and then Folder. You now have a folder within a folder. Always name folders that will directly identify the information within.
