SCHOOL VISITORS
In the interest of supporting a safe and secure environment, we ask that all parents/ guardians and guests check in at the front office before going to any classroom. All visitors will be given a badge or sticker to wear while on campus. We appreciate your support for student safety in this manner.
CLOSED CAMPUS
Students may not leave the school grounds during the school day. Parents may check their child out of school through the front office.
ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL
Regular and on-time school attendance is required by law and is necessary for student achievement. Research has shown that students with excessive absences and tardies from school are 1) less likely to achieve at grade level or above in school, 2) less likely to graduate from high school, 3) less likely to succeed in their work life, and 4) much more likely to become involved in juvenile crime. Time missed from school can never be adequately made up and any day or part of a day a student misses is lost learning time.
If your child has a fever or is otherwise ill, he should not be in school. However, only a medical appointment or funeral otherwise excuses a child from school.
By law, three unexcused absences constitutes truancy. We will work with you as much as we can to help you get your child to school, on time, each day but excessive rates of absence or tardiness result in the child being classified as a “habitual truant” by law and referred to the County School Attendance Review Board (SARB).
If your child has a doctor or dentist appointment at some time during the day, please be sure they attend school while they are not at their appointment.
TARDINESS
Please help your child arrive at school on time. Teachers carefully structure the morning and students coming in late miss instruction and interrupt the learning of the entire class. By law, three tardies over 30 minutes constitute truancy.
EMERGENY CARDS
The school maintains an emergency card on each student. For your child’s safety and best interests, it is vital that we be provided with current and accurate home and work telephone numbers of both parents, numbers of child care providers, and alternate numbers of neighbors and relatives in the event your child has an emergency.
Please remember to let us know if the numbers change during the year. If you have e-mail at home or work, please include it as well.
ILLNESS OR INJURY AT SCHOOL
Whenever a child becomes ill at school, the parents are contacted and arrangements are made for further care. Minor injuries are given first aide by the teacher or office staff. Please be sure that our office has current home and work phone numbers and email address if applicable along with the name of another adult to contact in case of an emergency.
CONTAGIOUS DISEASES AND CONDITIONS
If your child is diagnosed as having a contagious disease, please notify the school office immediately.
Head Lice: The school has a ‘no nit’ policy in the case of head lice. Children contracting lice must receive the treatment and a thorough comb-out to remove all nits (eggs) of the lice. Students must come into the office for a head check before being allowed to return to class. When a child is found to be infected, his or her entire class is checked.
MEDICATION
The school medication policy is state mandated and we must comply in all respects. If your child requires the administration of medication during school hours, a School Medication Authorization form must be filled out and signed by the prescribing doctor and parents. This also includes over-the-counter medication (cough syrup/pain relievers).
Medications must be brought to school by the parent or guardian of the student. They must not be taken to the classroom or kept by the child. Medications must be brought to school in the original containers.

INSURANCE
The school provides insurance for your child while he/she is going to and from school and while at school. The policy has other options, which parents may purchase.
IMMUNIZATIONS
The state mandates that all school students be immunized against measles (rubella and rubeola), diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus. Parents must provide student immunization records before we can enroll their child as a student.
All students entering 7 th grade in all public and private schools will need to have had three hepatitis B shots, a second MMR shot, and a tetanus booster. Hepatitis B shots must be spaced several months apart, so it is important that you begin this process now so that your child can enter the 7 th grade on schedule.
ORAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT
California law now requires that children have an oral health assessment (dental check-up) by May 31 in either kindergarten or first grade, whichever is his or her first year in public school.
TOBACCO FREE ENVIRONMENT
In the interest of public and student health, the Weaverville Elementary School District is proud to provide a healthy, tobacco free environment. All persons are to refrain from using any tobacco on school district property at any time.

BUS TRANSPORTATION
At the beginning of each year, parents must provide a signed written note providing the physical address for students riding the bus to and from school. If there is a change for any reason, any day, parents must provide a dated note if they wish their children to exit the bus at a stop other than their own home or usual stop. The only exception to this policy is if a parent calls the school in an emergency and requests another stop for their child.
Parents of students on inter-district transfers will need to make transportation arrangements on the days that Trinity High School has early release. Students will not be released early from the elementary school in order to ride the high school bus.
Riding the bus is a privilege. High standards of student behavior are required on the bus and at the bus stops. All passengers must accept the authority of the bus driver while on the bus. Students are responsible for their behavior going to and from the bus stops.
EMERGENCY DISMISSAL
In the event that we have to dismiss school under emergency conditions such as fire, extreme weather, flooding or other conditions, students will be dismissed from school. Parents should discuss with their children what they are to do and where they are to go in such an emergency, as it would be impossible for the school to call each parent. If such an event occurs, we will inform local radio and television stations.

Station officials will break into regular programming with the announcement. During heavy snow days, it may be unsafe for school busses to travel in the area of Oregon Street and Timber Ridge. Parents are encouraged to make alternate provisions to get their children to and from school.
SPECIAL SERVICES
- Weaverville After School Program is available for enrolled students Mon-Fri from after school until 6:00 p.m.
- COUNSELING SERVICES may be provided on a short-term basis by referral of teacher, parent or Student Success Team.
- HEARING SCREENING is provided by the school nurse.
- SPEECH THERAPIST: A diagnosis and/or treatment available for children referred by parents or teachers.
- DISTRICT SCHOOL NURSE: Is available for emergencies and questions relating to the health of your child.
- GATE: Program for academically talented and gifted students.
- INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC: Students in grades 5 through 8 may participate in instrumental music classes.
- CLASSROOM MUSIC: Our music teacher will regularly serve each classroom.
- ART: Our school funds a visual arts teacher four days a week.
- SPECIAL EDUCATION: Provides help for youngsters with exceptional needs in identified learning areas.
- SCHOOLWIDE TITLE 1: Provides supplemental support to students in the core academic areas.
- SPECIAL DAY CLASS, LEARNING HANDICAPPED: Provides instruction for students with identified learning handicaps.
STUDENT RIGHTS
All students have a right to learn. Any distraction that interferes with the process of teaching and learning will not be tolerated.
